House of Music: Raising the Kanneh-Masons

Talk:
5.00PM Sunday, 19th September 2021
Genre:

Seven brothers and sisters. All of them classically trained musicians. One was BBC Young Musician 2016 and performed for the Royal family. The eldest has released her first album of works by Clara Schumann.

These siblings don’t come from elite music schools, but a state comprehensive in Nottingham. How did they do it?

Join their mother, Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason, as she shares her story in conversation with James Manwaring, opening up about what it takes to raise a musical family in a Britain divided by class and race: the power of determination, camaraderie, a lot of hard work, and the joyous affirmation that children are a gift we must do all we can to nurture.

Kadiatu will appear with two of her children who will perform during the talk.

Duration: 1 hour

‘Riveting, taking in prejudice as well as sacrifice. There are 4.30am starts, lost instruments, fractured wrists, all captured with vivid flourishes. A paean to camaraderie.’ Observer
