The enchanted woodlands of Mendelssohn's incidental music to Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream begins the programme. This playful overture is partnered with a contemporaneous selection of songs written by a composer who was deeply inspired by Mendelssohn: Prince Albert. He composed them for performance at Windsor Castle and they have been brilliantly orchestrated for this premiere performance by Paul Mealor and sung by leading tenor Andrew Staples.

Completing the programme, the RPO performs Delius' On hearing the first Cuckoo in Spring, followed by Dvořák’s Symphony No.8. Infused with Dvořák’s Czech heritage, this Romantic symphony combines soaring string themes, rousing brass, atmospheric percussion and dancing woodwind.

Refreshments are available in the interval, but must be purchased in advance with your ticket:

Champagne: £10 per glass

White Wine: £6 per glass
