The beautiful city of Vienna forms the backdrop to this lunchtime concert.
Strauss was in his early twenties when he composed his passionate Violin Sonata. Inspired by his new love and future wife, soprano Pauline de Ahna, it hints at the glamorous, swirling scenes of Der Rosenkavalier that would follow. The 'Improvisation' at the heart of the work also sets the scene for some of the most iconic works by Fritz Kreisler. The master of the Viennese miniature, these include his farewell work Viennese Rhapsodic Fantasietta which closes the curtain on the Viennese ballroom of the 20th century.
