Thursday 28th March - Behind the Throne: A Domestic History of the Royal Household

Behind the Throne Tinniswood Image

Speaker: Adrian Tinniswood

Duration: 1 hour

Returning to the Festival with his new book, Adrian Tinniswood will explore the domestic history of the royal household, revealing Britain’s monarchs as seen through the eyes of those who keep their secrets.

Charles I maintained a household of 2,000 people, Victoria had a medical establishment of 30 doctors, three dentists and a chiropodist, whilst Elizabeth II keeps a full-time staff of 1,200. Everyone is there to smooth the sovereign’s path through life, while simultaneously confirming his or her status.

‘This is the most interesting and informative book on British royalty for many years’  Sarah Bedford, Literary Review

‘A wonderfully entertaining account of life through five centuries of royal households’  Christopher Hart, Sunday Times
