Textiles Tales: A trail though Eton College Collections

Dates:
9 September - 29 October 2023
Genre:
New Image

Explore Eton College's three museums and special exhibition with a textiles twist. Pick up your free Textiles Tales Trail from any of our museums or Eton Information Centre (adult and children's versions available) and enjoy your visit.

Eton College Collections span thousands of years in over 160,000 artefacts, specimens, artworks and documents. While some are on permanent public display in our museums, others are kept safely in the store or are enjoyed in the working buildings of this 600 year old school. Some objects come together for a short time only as our special exhibitions programme. The Textiles Tales Trail enables you to see the items on regular display in a new light as well as in the exhibition Ad Montem: Eton's Lost Procession.

Textiles are woven into the fabric of our everyday lives; from the clothes we wear to the furnishings in our home. Throughout history and today, people are wrapped in cloth at birth and death and many textiles hold special memories and traditions. In this trail we invite you to explore textiles in some perhaps unexpected contexts and look beyond the obvious to learn more about the stories behind some of the textiles cared for by Eton College Collections.

Our museums are located across the site but visitors can collect a map from the Museum of Eton Life which is accessed via Brewhouse Yard at the end of Baldwin's Shore. If walking along Eton High Street from Windsor, turn right at the large blue building (St Christopher's House). The Museum will also be signposted from Porters' Lodge (next to College Chapel, opposite the entrance to Common Lane).

Note: College Chapel will form part of the trail on Sunday 10 September and Sunday 17 September only.
