Music: What is it and what is it for?

Talk
3.00PM Thursday, 28th September 2017

Everybody loves music. But have you ever stopped to wonder exactly what music is?

What makes one sound music and another just noise? Do animals make music? And what is music for? Why do we choose to organise sound waves in certain ways? Is it something to do with their natural properties, or is it entirely a cultural invention of our own? Is music always a force for good in human society? And are some kinds of music better than others?

Using examples from medieval to modern, plainsong to birdsong, author Andrew Gant will explore all these questions taken from his latest book.
