Across the Black Waters: Indian Soldiers in the First World War

Performance:
2.30PM Tuesday, 20th September 2016
Genre:

Considered one of the greatest war novels ever printed, Across the Black Waters was written in 1939 but its republication as a WWI Centenary edition has brought back into focus a writer of astonishing range and profound humanity.

Leading cultural figures Dominic Rai, Co-Director of Salt of the Sarkar; Alastair Niven, Man Booker Prize judge; and David Omissi, author of Indian Voices of The Great War, will explore Mulk Raj Anand’s work and the realities it was based on. Enhanced by readings from fiction and soldiers’ letters home, given by actor and playwright Kulvinder Ghir, this talk will share the little-known contribution and experiences of over a million soldiers from undivided India who fought for Britain in the First World War.

Speakers: Alastair Niven, David Omissi and Dominic Rai with Kulvinder Ghir

Duration: 1 hour

The Germans, not knowing of our arrival, believe that the British Army is without support.’ - Havildar Lachman Singh, Across the Black Waters
