Is There Anything Writers Shouldn't Write About?

Performance:
2.30PM Sunday, 25th September 2016
Genre:

In the light of growing extremism in the world, of the Government’s attitude to the Human Rights Act, and of calls for more press regulation, four former Presidents of the writers’ organisation English PEN, three of them best-selling novelists, are joined by the Chief Executive of IMPRESS, the first fully independent press regulator in the UK, for this thought-provoking discussion.

Virginia Woolf said ‘everything is the stuff of fiction’, but was she right? Should there be constraints on free speech? Should changes be made to ensure we live in a tolerant, but safe writing environment? And should journalists have the same freedom as novelists?

Speakers:

Rachel Billington, Jonathan Heawood, Alastair Niven and Gillian Slovo

Duration: 1 hour
